HIGHLIGHTS

Zeke is a well-rounded pup that has the perfect balance of playfulness and calm. He currently lives with four other dogs that he loves to play with – his favorite is chase, but he’s been known to play wrestle on occasion, and he loves to sunbathe in the backyard. When it’s not playtime, it’s snuggle time as far as Zeke is concerned. He loves to cuddle up with both human and canine alike, and he has the chin-rest-puppy-dog-eyes combination down to an art form. Zeke would happily join you on a run or a hike, and then settle in with you to watch some Netflix (yes, he really will watch TV for a bit before curling up for his nap).

Zeke has received professional training from Rucker Dog Training, and comes with lifetime access to their advanced classes, in case you ever need to brush up on his obedience. Zeke is conditioned on both a prong collar and an e-collar; his command repertoire includes:
- Heel (walking beside you at your pace)
- Sit (which by default means stay until you release him)
- Place (he remains in a designated area until you release him)
- Leave it, wait, and take (leave it means he can’t have something; wait and take are great tools for feeding time and treats)
- Drop it (release an item, whether it’s a toy or something he’s not supposed to have)
- Off (used for counter surfing, getting over excited when greeting people, or getting off furniture)
- Come (recalled to your side from any distance)

When you adopt Zeke, his foster will show you how to work with him on the training collars using all of these commands. Remember, training is something that has to be consistently practiced with a dog to continue to be effective – but the good news is that the hard work is already done, you just have to do the maintenance to enjoy a well-behaved dog that actually listens to you!

Now that we’ve talked about how absolutely awesome Zeke is, let’s talk about his challenges. What? Yep, don't we all have challenges? Zeke is what’s known as a “resource guarder.” That means that there are certain high value resources (in Zeke’s case its dog food, people food, and bones/antlers) that he will guard from other dogs. The easiest thing to do in this situation is place Zeke into a home where he is the only dog. While Zeke can happily live in a home with other dogs (he’s doing so in his foster home), the high value resources have to be diligently managed at all times. That means that antlers and bones can’t be left lying around for dogs to have full access to, food can’t be left out all day so that the dogs can graze, and dogs can’t go into the kitchen sit around the dinner table and beg while the people eat. Because Zeke only guards his resources from other dogs (not people), being an only dog is the easiest way to manage this behavior. But if other dogs come visit, his owners will have to make sure that they set him up for success by removing any resources and using the crate to separate the dogs if there is going to be food or bones involved.

While Zeke may require a little more work to manage his resource guarding, his sweet and loving personality does more than make up for it. The lucky family that adopts Zeke is going to be rewarded day in and day out with the joy that such a happy, playful, and affectionate dog will bring to their lives.

Zeke Bell's DOB is 11/20/2017 and is up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, microchipped and neutered. All YLDR doggins are kept on monthly heart worm and flea preventatives.
